Dental Insurance for Students: Helpful or a Money-Waster?

Kelly Sundstrom

Does dental insurance for students pay off? It could depend on the health and wellness of your teeth and gums. A student with excessive decay, gum disease, or tooth damage might end up spending large amounts of money on dental work than a student who only needs basic dental services like cleanings and check-ups. As a student, you might still have dental coverage under your parent's insurance plan. Can it benefit you to get your own dental insurance? Students interested in having autonomy from their parents may want their own dental insurance, but student dental insurance does not always cover as much as a family plan does.

Although most colleges these days require health insurance for students, student health insurance plans do not often cover dental. Additional dental insurance will cost extra. Although an added expense, it may just end up amounting to less than what you would pay out of pocket without any insurance. As a student, you want to save all the money you can for your classes, room and board. Don't waste money out of pocket on dental work that insurance can cover.

What Dental Insurance for Students Covers

What dental insurance covers will depend on what type of policy you decide to buy. Basic dental insurance policies often cover standard dental procedures, including examinations, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, root canals and preventative care such as sealants. Policies that cost a little more than the basic might cover other procedures, such as crowns, bridges or implants. Know the limitations of your dental insurance where braces or even extraction of third molars may not be covered. Students like yourself do not always spend money on services other than regular cleanings and exams. When insurance covers other services, like sealants, you can make sure to keep your teeth healthy and strong throughout your college career.

Make the Most Out of Your Dental Insurance

Although you might think of using dental insurance for more major dental procedures, you can make the most out of your insurance by taking advantage of all of the preventative and cosmetic dental work that your policy covers. Have you always wanted to seal your teeth to prevent deep pit cavities? Do you have an overbite or chipped tooth you want to correct? Go ahead and schedule your procedures so that your dental insurance does not go to waste. Make sure to take care of your teeth using proper oral hygiene so that you can maintain the good health of your mouth when away from the dental office.
