An Apple Smiles Snack Is Sure to Please

Why an apple smiles snack? Well, as most parents can attest, children are not always all that daring when it comes to trying new foods. This often means Moms and Dads spend mealtime cajoling their child into eating something healthy while he demands only a specific set of his favorite foods. A healthy and well-balanced diet is vital for many aspects of a child's health, including his teeth and gums. Providing him with a variety of foods from each food group is an ideal way to make sure he is getting the nutrients he needs. This is not always easy, but an apple smiles snack will make him happy—it's fun and yummy—and it will make parents happy because it's healthy.

Preparation

An apple smiles snack is both nutritious and easy to put together. To make the snack, cut a red apple in half, remove the core and cut each half into slices. Place one apple slice on a plate and spread it with a thin layer of peanut butter. Place three mini marshmallows on the peanut butter. Next, spread another slice of apple with a thin smear of peanut butter and press it on top of the marshmallows. Make sure the skin of the apple faces out. When the snack is complete, the red apple slices resemble lips and the marshmallows look like teeth. Looking at the smiley snack is a surefire way to make a child smile, too.

Health Benefits

According to Eating Well magazine, apples are a healthy source of fiber and vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for a healthy body and to protect a child's immune system, which means it can help to keep oral health issues at bay. Best Health magazine adds that apples stimulate saliva production, which in turn washes bacteria from a child's teeth, preventing tooth decay. Peanut butter offers protein and healthy fats, which are also essential for good overall health.

Considerations

Sugary snacks are not good for a child's teeth, and the peanut butter and marshmallows in an apple smiles snack contain sugar. While the snack does offer plenty in the way of nutrition, in order to keep the sugar content at a reasonable level, go easy on the peanut butter, and limit the portions to a couple of marshmallows. Serve the snack with a glass of water to rinse your child's teeth once he has finished eating, and make sure he takes a trip to the sink to brush his teeth afterwards.
