Teach Kids Dental Care: Easy and Fun Art Projects

Tricia Mool

What better way to teach kids dental care than by doing art projects? These fun activities will engage your children in a creative activity and help them learn that dental care can be fun. Bold colors and interesting tactile experiences can engage children in learning about good oral hygiene.

Some children are already fascinated by brushing their teeth. Kids can be very engaged in the process of trying new toothpastes, such as Colgate® 2 in 1 Toothpaste and Mouthwash, and watching themselves in the mirror while brushing. These art projects will get kids even more excited about oral hygiene.

Paint Your Teeth! *Ages 5–8

Help kids paint pictures of their mouth and teeth on black construction paper. Use opaque white paint for teeth. The black construction paper will show through the areas that are not completely painted and around the edges of the teeth.

You will need:

  • Black construction paper
  • Adhesive tape or putty
  • Mirror
  • White paint

To do the activity:

  1. Hang black construction paper and a hand mirror near each other on a wall.
  2. Have kids examine their teeth in the mirror. They should open wide and count how many teeth they have on top and on bottom.
  3. Draw a large circle on the black paper for the mouth.
  4. Have children paint a picture of their teeth using their fingers or a paintbrush.

As the paint dries, talk to your kids about using toothpaste and brushing their teeth. Explain that cavities and decay can form. Point to the dark spots on the painting. This picture is a great visual example of what happens to teeth if we neglect to brush or properly take care of them.

After the first layer of paint has dried, use more white paint to fill in the teeth so no black shows through. Discuss the benefits of good dental care and encourage kids to keep the picture to remind them to brush every morning and night.

For a sunny alternative, use sidewalk chalk. Bring a hand mirror outside and have children use white chalk to draw their teeth. A blacktop area works best for this version of the project. Snap a photo of the drawing that children can use as a brushing reminder.

Practice Flossing *Ages 6–9

Flossing and brushing are important habits to instill in children at an early age. Here's an easy art project that can help kids learn good flossing habits. For safety, an adult should take care of the steps that involve scissors.

You will need:

  • Cardboard bathroom tissue roll
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Pencil
  • Paint (optional)

To do the activity:

  1. Use scissors to poke a small hole in one side of the roll for the mouth opening. Cut an oval that is 2 to 3 inches wide and about half an inch tall.
  2. Make cuts perpendicular to the edges of the oval around the top and bottom. This will leave small flaps for teeth.
  3. Let kids paint or decorate the tube to resemble a mouth.
  4. Once the decoration is complete and paint has dried, have kids pretend to brush and floss the "teeth" with string. Demonstrate correct flossing technique for children. Have them mimic you when they floss their cardboard teeth.

Children's dental care is an important part of their overall health. Teach kids dental care by using these engaging art projects to show that taking care of their teeth is necessary for a great smile.
