The Best Options for Adult Braces

Kelly Sundstrom

When you think of braces, you might think of the typical teenager with a gleaming silver grin. But this procedure isn't just for kids. In fact, adult braces are becoming more and more popular now that innovations like clear and invisible braces are available. They allow you to straighten your teeth without a mouth full of metal.

Why Get Braces?

People decide to get braces for their children or for themselves for many different reasons:

  • Crooked or misaligned teeth can interfere with a healthy bite, and could cause excessive tooth wear, jaw problems, and chipped teeth.
  • A small mouth can cause tooth crowding, while a large mouth can cause larger spaces in between teeth.
  • Many people simply do not like the look of their smiles and would prefer teeth that look straighter or more even.

Options

When you visit your orthodontist, you can ask him about the various options out there for straightening adult teeth. You can find a method to suit your lifestyle, whether you choose to have the more traditional braces that adhere to your teeth or whether you choose to have a removable aligner.

You can wear removable aligners, also referred to as invisible braces, throughout the day and night, removing them when needed for business meetings or for special occasions. If you decide to have invisible braces, your orthodontist will take a mold of your teeth, and will create specialized, clear trays that fit your mouth. These trays are removable, which is ideal for those who work with the public. You won't have to worry about lisping when you talk to customers or coworkers!

Other options include clear braces, which your orthodontist will install just like traditional braces, directly on to your teeth. The braces are less noticeable because the brackets, as well as the pieces that attach to the teeth, are completely clear. Talk to your orthodontist about which option you might like the best.

Educate Yourself

If you're not sure if you should get braces—or how the braces will actually straighten your teeth—you can educate yourself ahead of time by reading about different orthodontic treatments. Find out what options exist for adult braces, how to take care of your teeth when you have braces, and how to maintain your straight smile once your braces come off.
