Which Teeth Whitening Solution Is Best for You?

Wendy J. Woudstra

While our teeth are not, by nature, perfectly white, most people feel that they could improve their smile with brighter, whiter teeth. It is inevitable that our teeth darken and yellow with age, and as a result of eating and drinking certain foods and beverages, but there are various ways to safely remove the yellowing, leaving a whiter, more radiant smile.

Teeth Whitening at Home

You don't necessarily have to change your habits to whiten your teeth. Simply replacing your regular toothpaste with a whitening toothpaste and using a whitening mouthwash, such as Colgate Optic White, is a great way to start whitening your smile gradually. If you regularly chew gum after meals, there are some brands of chewing gum that contain a peroxide source that may also whiten your teeth, as well.

If you don't mind changing your daily routine just a little, you can buy whitening strips at the local drugstore, or get a whitening gel and trays from your dentist. Both of these products are applied to the teeth for a certain amount of time for a number of days as detailed on the package label.

Professional Teeth Whitening

For the fastest and most efficient whitening, you should consult a dentist, who can offer professional whitening treatments. In-office whitening treatments contain whitening agents in higher concentrations that produce results much more quickly than over-the-counter options. In fact, your teeth may be visibly whiter in just one visit. You also have the added benefit of a treatment that is supervised by a dental professional. Additional home whitening will be indicated with long-term success of these in-office whitening treatments.

No matter which option you choose, you'll find that even once you've reached your desired level of whiteness, you'll need to touch up now and then.
