“MAKE THE U” CONTEST
OFFICIAL RULES
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN
1. HOW IT WORKS: Colgate-Palmolive Company and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation want to know, “How do you think education can impact the heritage of Hispanic generations to come?” Think it over and submit your own original essay of 500 words or fewer. See Rule #2 for the criteria by which contest entries will be judged. See Rule #4 to see if you are eligible to participate in this contest.
Your contest entry may be submitted via one of the following two methods:
A. INTERNET: Visit www.colgate.com/hazlau and follow the on-screen directions to submit your contest entry. Internet entry period begins 12:01AM ET on 9/15/09 and ends 11:59PM ET on 11/30/09.
B. MAIL: A. Legibly hand-print or type your complete name, mailing address, date of birth, and daytime telephone number on the top-right corner of a letter sized (8½” x 11”) piece of paper. Then, legibly hand-print or type your original essay on the remainder of the page or on an attached piece of paper and mail in a #10 envelope with First Class postage affixed, to: “Make the U” Contest Entries, 2286 E. Carson Street #261, Long Beach, CA 90807, to be received by 12/4/09. If an entry requires more than one piece of paper, all pages must be stapled together. Limit of one entry per outer mailing envelope.
C. By submitting an entry, you acknowledge that you have read and understood these Official Rules and you agree to be bound by them and the decisions of the contest judges which shall be final in all respects. Entry information does not count toward the word limit for essays. Entries must be in English or Spanish. Limit one entry per person regardless of method of entry. Decisions of the judges will be final. All entries submitted will become the sole property of Sponsors and none will be returned.
2. JUDGING: All eligible entries received via online and by mail will be judged by a panel of judges selected by The Hispanic Heritage Foundation to determine (1) Grand prize winner and (15) Additional prize winners. All judging will be based on the following criteria: originality and creativity (40%); inspirational quality (40%); and appropriateness to topic (20%). In the event of a tie, tied entries will be re judged in accordance with the criteria listed above. Potential winners will be notified by mail on or about 12/18/09. Any entry, which in the sole opinion of Sponsors, is deemed inappropriate (e.g., because it contains defamatory, profane or inappropriate language, etc.) or inconsistent with the contest theme or image of Sponsors and the contest, will result in disqualification.
3. PRIZES AND APPROXIMATE RETAIL VALUE: (1) Grand Prize: A $10,000 education grant from The Hispanic Heritage Foundation; and, (15) Additional Prizes: A $1,000 education grant from The Hispanic Heritage Foundation. Winners must matriculate at an accredited college, university or trade school within 2 years of prize acceptance. Grant must be utilized within one school year; any funds not utilized at the end of such school year will be forfeited. The prizes will be awarded only once and consist exclusively on the prizes describe herein
4. ELIGIBILITY: Open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and Washington, D.C., who are High School students 16 years of age or older as of 9/15/09 (residents of Maine must be 18 years of age or older); additionally, entrant’s must be of Hispanic decent. Void where prohibited or restricted by law. Employees of Colgate-Palmolive Company, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, their affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies and the immediate family members and/or those living in the same household of each are not eligible to enter and/or participate.
5. GENERAL RULES: Void where prohibited. All income taxes, costs, fees, and other expenses not identified in the prize packages are the sole responsibility of winners. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. All potential winners (or parent/legal guardian if potential winner is deemed a minor in his/her state of residence) must sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability and Publicity Release within (5) days of attempted notification certifying that entry submission is entrant’s own original work, has not been previously published, distributed or promoted, has not won a previous prize or award and that he/she has followed the Official Rules of the contest. Noncompliance within this time period or return of any prize notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification without further notice and an alternate winner will be determined. By submission of an entry, entrants agree to waive any and all rights, title and interest in the submitted
material and assigns all such rights, title and interest to Sponsors. Proof of submission will not be deemed proof of receipt. Sponsors reserve the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value. This doesn’t make sense since what we are awarding is cash grants for College) Winners (or parent/legal guardian if potential winner is deemed a minor in his/her state of residence) may make no substitution or transfer of prizes. Acceptance of prize constitutes each winner’s (or parent/legal guardian if potential winner is deemed a minor in his/her state of residence) permission for Sponsors and their agencies to use winner’s entry, image, name, voice, biography, and/or likeness for purposes of advertising, publicity and trade without further compensation, unless prohibited by law. By accepting a prize, each winner (or parent/legal guardian if potential winner is deemed a minor in his/her state of residence) agrees to hold Sponsors, their affiliates and agencies and each of their respective
officers, directors, agents and employees, harmless against any and all claims and liability arising out of the contest or the use of any prize. Winners (or parent/legal guardian if potential winner is deemed a minor in his/her state of residence) assume all liability for any injury or damage caused, or claimed to be caused by participation in this contest or use or redemption of any prize or any prize-related activities. Sponsors are not responsible for typographical or other errors in the printing or administration of the contest or in the announcement of the winners or prizes. In the event there is a discrepancy or inconsistency between disclosures or other statements contained in any contest materials and the terms and conditions of the Official Rules, the English Official Rules shall control.
6. INTERNET DISCLOSURE: Sponsors are not responsible for incomplete, lost, late, damaged, illegible, stolen or corrupted entries, or for any technical problems, malfunctions of any telephone lines, computer systems, servers, providers, hardware/software, lost or unavailable network connections or failed, incomplete, garbled or delayed computer transmission or any combination thereof. Sponsors are not responsible for any damage to any participant’s computer system/software related to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in this promotion. CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEB SITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THIS PROGRAM IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAW. SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSORS RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH INDIVIDUAL TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. Any use of robotic, automatic, programmed, or the like methods of participation will void all such submissions by such methods.
If for any reason the program is canceled, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures or any other causes outside control of Sponsors which impair or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this program, Sponsors reserve the right at their sole discretion to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process and to cancel, modify, terminate or suspend the contest. In the event of termination, a notice will be posted on the website and all eligible entries received prior to the time of termination will be judged.
7. For the names of winners, send a self-addressed, stamped (#10) envelope to: “Make the U” Contest” Winners, 2286 E. Carson Street #261, Long Beach CA 90807, to be received by 12/28/09.
