Giving up smoking or smokeless tobacco is hard to do. But every day, people are taking the first
step by calling a quit line. Quit lines are toll-free help lines where you can talk to a counselor about ways to stop.
Quit lines provide counseling and recorded messages. You can ask to be mailed
information on how to quit. Quit lines can link you to local services to help
you quit.
Many quit lines can provide information for special groups, such as:
- Pregnant women
- Users of smokeless (chew) tobacco
- People who want to help a friend or family member quit
- Different racial or ethnic groups
- Teen smokers
Anyone in the United States can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) for
information. Many states also have their own quit lines. If your state has
its own quit line, you'll be automatically connected to it when you call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
The U.S. government has a website dedicated
to helping people give up tobacco. It links to the North American quit line
site, which includes an interactive
map. If you go to this map and click on your state, you'll get lots of
information:
- Quit line phone numbers
- Hours of the quit line
- Eligibility requirements for counseling and free medications
- Types of counseling
- Languages spoken
Most states can provide counseling in more than 140 languages.
