Heart Disease and Oral Health

There are several theories that attempt to explain the possible link between periodontal or gum disease and heart disease.

One theory suggests that the bacteria present with gum disease enter the bloodstream and infect the lining of the blood vessels. The toxins produced by the oral bacteria encourage the accumulation of fatty deposits on vessel walls, forming clots and causing strokes and heart attacks.
