Our daughter is required to read 20 min per night. So all three kids go up to bed 20 min early brush their teeth, go to the bathroom and wash up. Then they go into their rooms to read at bed time it is lights out time. It turned out to be a great wind down time for them and now we have less problems getting them to bed.

I keep a small egg timer on the bathroom sink that my kids can set for 2 min. each time they brush. They love to hear it ding when they are done. Also, we say they have "sugar bugs" on their teeth that they try to get out. They like trying to get all of them.

Parents have always faced a challenge when putting their kids to bed. But, say experts, sleeping battles are now nearly epidemic, since some working parents are not enforcing good habits.

How can you help your children care for their teeth and prevent cavities? Start by showing your child that caring for their teeth is a priority and it can be a lot of fun.

So, what is the right way to brush, anyway? Do you know? For a minimum of two minutes, you should brush using short, gentle strokes, brushing the gum line, getting hard-to-reach back teeth and areas around fillings.

Just as a child develops language skills long before being able to speak, the child also develops literacy skills long before being able to read. What parents do, or don't do, has a lasting impact on their child's reading skill and literacy.

There is no more important activity for preparing your child to succeed as a reader than reading aloud together. Fill your story times with a variety of books. Be consistent, be patient and watch the magic work.
