  • Cigarette Burns

Depends on the finish of your wood. For urethane, we recommend using a touch-up kit, which you can usually get from your local hardware store. Just rub with sandpaper, stain and refinish. For more deep-seated burns, individual wood boards may need to be replaced.

  • Alcohol Stains

This calls for Murphy® Oil Soap. Simply rub the stain with a cloth dampened with Murphy® Oil Soap and warm water. If it persists, rub with a new cloth dampened with denatured alcohol.

  • Chewing Gum

Freeze it off! Just place a bag of ice wrapped in a cloth over the gum. Then scrape off any loose material with a blunt blade, being careful not to scratch the wood's finish.

  • Crayon Marks

Just rub diluted Murphy® Oil Soap into the crayon mark, and then wipe the spot dry before buffing with a dry cloth.

  • Grease Stains

Just place an ice cube on the grease spot ASAP. That will harden the grease and allow you to scrape it off gently with a knife, being careful not to scratch your wood's finish. Sop up excess grease by ironing a piece of cloth over the spot with your iron on its lowest setting.
Then clean the area with Murphy® Oil Soap, dry and polish.

Rub the stain with a hot damp cloth and Murphy® Oil Soap. If you're still having limited success, the top layer of your floor may need to be removed by power sanding or scraping. Then refinish.

  • Paint or Varnish

This requires a delicate touch. Rub the stain lightly with a cloth dampened with a formulated paint remover. Make sure you read the manufacturer's instructions. You don't want to damage the finish of your wood.

  • Nail Polish Stains

Try Murphy® Oil Soap and plastic scouring pads. Then rinse and dry. Nail polish loves to bind with your wood finish, potentially damaging it. So you may need to refinish the affected area.

  • Shoe Polish

Murphy® Oil Soap and warm water is your fix. Sometimes a gentle rub with a scrubbing pad can help too. Afterward, rinse the area with a Murphy® Soft Wipe, dry and polish. If floor finish has been removed in that area, recoat with appropriate finish or wax.

  • Dried Milk or Food Stains

A common problem with a simple solution. Remove the stain by working from the outer edge toward the center of the stain. Finally, rub the spot with a cloth lightly dampened with Murphy® Oil Soap before going over it with a soft, dry cloth.

  • White rings / Spots on my wood

Those white rings or spots usually occur on worn or older wood finishes as a result of excess water. Place coasters or pads under flowerpots, vases or drinks. Always remove liquid spills immediately with a soft, dry cloth. If the white areas remain after cleaning and buffing, you may need to contact a wood care professional.
