Tips for Making People Smile

Bringing a smile to someone’s face or making them laugh can improve their day and even improve your relationship with them. But how can you make someone smile? Here are a few tips on how to make people smile that are easy and fun to do.

1. Do a Random Act of Kindness

Do something kind for someone. Giving a gift or doing a favor with no expectations in return is a true act of kindness. The receiver of your random act of kindness will feel appreciated and cared for. During Be Kind to Humankind Week, doing a small act of kindness for the people you know or don't know can make them smile and improve their day.

2. Give a Compliment

Complimenting a friend, family member, partner, coworker, or stranger can make someone smile and improve their day. Compliments can include complimenting their style, idea, or any other thing you’ve noticed and appreciated about them, makes them smile. If this is a person you’re close to, you may not share every time you’re thinking about them or what you appreciate about them. Giving a polite compliment to a stranger or acquaintance can improve their day and make them smile.

3. Say Hello and Smile

Smiles are contagious! A smile and a hello to people you come across throughout your day can be small happy moments with delivery people, baristas, cashiers, and the other people you interact with.

If you know someone in your life is feeling sad, reaching out with compassion, asking how they are, and actively listening to what they say may help them feel better. While you can’t make everyone happy every time, saying hello, giving compliments, and doing acts of kindness will create little moments of connection with others.
