In high-performance sport, where teams constantly search for a competitive edge, a new performance frontier is taking centre stage: dental health. This strategic shift is epitomised by figures like FC Barcelona's football coach, Hansi Flick, who made comprehensive dental exams mandatory for every player1 — a decision rooted in sports science and the link between dental health and peak performance.
This new focus is a direct response to a growing body of evidence showing that poor dental health is a significant, preventable liability. Data from major events like the London 2012 Olympic Games revealed a stark picture: 18% of athletes reported their performance was negatively impacted by oral issues.2 Later, a more comprehensive study found this number was even higher, with nearly a third (32%) of elite athletes reporting that their performance was compromised by dental health issues.3
It is now a well-documented fact that dental health problems can trigger a body-wide response that directly undermines athletic performance by slowing muscle repair and recovery, and can also increase the risk of reinjuries. 4–6
This new understanding has led to an evolution in how sporting support teams are structured. As the Academy for Sports Dentistry explains, the dentist is no longer an outside consultant but a core member of a ‘Trusted Triad’ with the athletic trainer and the coach.7
This collaborative model allows for a holistic approach to athletic health, where the team can establish personalised dental care plans that include proactive screenings, proper brushing techniques, regular professional teeth cleaning, and the use of antigerm dental products like dual zinc and arginine toothpaste and mouthwash to maintain peak dental health.7–10
The secretary of the Indian Dental Association, Dr. Ashok Dhoble, quoted that Sports Dentistry is not just about treating injuries but about empowering our future dental force to protect athletes before injuries happen.11
Rahul Dravid explains that modern athletes must focus on even the smallest details to gain a competitive edge. Dental health is one such key factor. He also points to global practices, noting how Hansi Flick has made dental checkups mandatory, showcasing a growing trend in which coaches and athletes are prioritizing oral care as part of peak performance.12
Colgate Total® Toothpaste is one such defense against performance-sapping oral problems and is proven to be 3X more effective at fighting germ plaque.* Whether you're competing at the highest level, passionate about your fitness, or dedicated to a lifestyle of personal wellness, a standard dental regimen isn't enough to combat the dental health risks your active body faces. You need a high-performance defence system designed to protect your dental health and your investment in peak performance.
Dental health is the new mandate for elite sports professionals, signalling that the world's best are catching on. A healthy athlete is a high-performing athlete, and true athletic health is incomplete without excellent dental health. This new holistic approach is a direct response to a growing body of scientific evidence. It represents an evolution in performance strategy where achieving peak dental health is now considered fundamental to unlocking peak performance.
Data shows that Poor dental health has negatively affected the performance of athletes during final games, which highlights the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and dental screenings.
Regular dental check-ups, teeth cleaning and the use of anti-germ products will help in early detection of problems, allowing athletes to maintain good dental health and gain a competitive edge.
The sports world is now emphasizing the importance of dental health and regular dental screenings, which help achieve peak performance.
Use of effective oral care products is important for athletes as they act as a defence against harmful germs that cause dental issues.
For elite athletes, maintaining peak dental health is a mandate to achieve peak performance.
