Frequently Asked Questions
When was Colgate Total launched?
Colgate-Palmolive launched the Colgate Total toothpaste in December, 1997. Colgate Total was the first toothpaste to obtain the ADA Acceptance Seal for helping prevent and reduce dental deterioration, gingivitis, plaque and bad breath when used as indicated.
How does Colgate Total work?
All Colgate toothpastes contain a unique formula that helps fight today’s most common dental and mouth problems including cavities, plaque, tartar buildup, gingivitis, and bad breath. The Colgate Total formula is so revolutionary, it has been patented.
The first active ingredient is Triclosan, which is used to prevent plaque and gingivitis. The second active ingredient is Flouride which is used for protection against cavities. Both are effective in reducing tartar buildup and proportioning a long duration for fresh breath.
The Triclosan is active in between brushing because the Colgate Total toothpaste also contains a patented copolymer, called Gantrez. Gantrez makes it possible for the Triclosan to stay on top of the teeth’s surface, giving continuous protection for up to 12 hours. Colgate Total is the only toothpaste that has a Triclosan/Copolymer patented system.
The copolymer Gantrez does not prevent Flouride from getting to the tooth. In fact, Colgate toothpaste contains fluoride which needs to get to the tooth’s surface for it to be activated.

Plaque is a sticky and invisible layer that builds up on the surface of teeth due to bacteria and saliva. The daily use of dental floss and a complete brush can remove plaque.
Tartar buildup is the mineral deposit that forms along the line of gums.
When tartar gets hard it can only be removed with a professional dental cleaning, when the dentist scrapes and polishes the teeth.
The best way to remove the plaque that causes the dental deterioration, is by brushing your teeth every day. Brushing your teeth removes the plaque from the teeth’s surface.
