CBD and Oral Care. Are There Benefits?

It's no secret that CBD products are growing in popularity. You can find a CBD version of almost any everyday item you can think of—from water, lotions, and bath bombs to toothpaste, toothpicks, and mouthwash. Researchers are continually studying CBD for its health benefits, but how can it be applied to dental health?

What is CBD?

Short for cannabidiol, CBD is a natural chemical found in the Cannabis sativa plant. This non-psychoactive cannabinoid can potentially benefit oral health because of its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Whether administered through oils, gummies, capsules, or topicals, treatments related to anxiety, insomnia, and some cases of pain and inflammation all leverage the benefits of CBD.

What Are the Potential Benefits of CBD?

Conclusive evidence involving CBD and oral care doesn't exist yet, but CBD toothpaste is said to be a natural way to remove stains from teeth while keeping your gums safe. Other benefits of CBD include:

  • Reduces inflammation that can lead to gum diseases
  • Attacks bacteria associated with tooth decay
  • It helps fight bad breath
  • Sensitivity relief
  • Reduces risk of cavities
  • Encourages tooth remineralizing
  • Restores pH balance

CBD Toothpaste vs. Regular Toothpaste

Some studies suggest that the anti-inflammatory properties in CBD have the potential to be effective in oral health. Natural ingredients are a notable differentiator of CBD toothpaste vs. regular toothpaste. Many CBD oral care products claim to be fluoride-free, paraben-free, vegan, and cruelty-free, which isn't always the case with traditional toothpaste. Activated charcoal is also a common ingredient in CBD Toothpaste to help with whitening teeth.

Note: If you switch to fluoride-free toothpaste, talk with your dental professional about making sure you get the recommended amount through another source.

CBD Mouthwash vs. Regular Mouthwash

Mouthwash is an essential part of practicing good dental hygiene—not to mention it can leave your mouth feeling minty fresh. Antiseptic mouth rinses prevent harmful bacteria and dental plaque or biofilm from building up. Though no studies regarding the efficacy of CBD mouthwash currently exist, many CBD-infused mouthwash products contain no alcohol, dyes, or artificial sweeteners and claim to fight bad breath. Some CBD mouthwash formulations feature aloe vera for a natural soothing sensation.

It's important to note that CBD isn't legal for purchase everywhere. As more research becomes available, CBD is becoming more mainstream. If you're interested in incorporating products like CBD charcoal toothpaste and CBD mouthwash into your oral care routine, consult with a dental professional to see if it's right for you.
